About Emily
I take vision and make it reality.
In 2009 I took a train to see a run down farm that had been in my family since 1795. As I walked the acres I saw potential for a one of a kind residency for artists. In the ensuing months I created SPACE on Ryder Farm. In the decade plus that followed, SPACE became one of the premiere places for artist development in the country.
Currently I work as an executive coach, strategic advisor and fundraising consultant. My clients include David Byrne and his foundation Arbutus, Knock for Democracy, Matthew Strother Center for The Examined Life, Soul Science Lab and Mara Brock Akil’s Writers’ Colony. I’ve helped these emergent organizations chart their path.
From 2009-2021, I birthed, grew and sustained SPACE on Ryder Farm, as the organization’s Founding Executive Director. During my tenure at SPACE I supported 1,500 artists through fully subsidized residences including Clare Barron, Celine Song, Nia DaCosta, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rupi Kaur, Young Jean Lee, Antoinette Nwandu, Carmen Perez, Adam Rapp, Sarah Ruhl, Shaina Taub, Rebecca Traister and Mfoniso Udofia. Committed to equity and justice, I architected The Family Residency at SPACE, a first of its kind residency supporting parent artists (predominantly mothers) and in 2017 SPACE committed to granting 50% of residencies to people of color and other underrepresented voices. In my 11 years at the helm I grew the organization’s annual operating budget from $0 to $1.5 million, the organization’s staff from 0 to 12 and the Board to 15. I was the organization’s primary fundraiser, securing millions of philanthropic dollars.
I’m passionate about progressive ideals. In 2020 I co-founded TieDyen4Biden - a grassroots campaign that raised $170,000 for Democratic candidates during that election cycle.
I’ve developed and taught curriculum for NYU and The North Carolina School of the Arts. Outside of my core work in the arts, I consulted with Bi-Jingo, a management development firm (whose clients include Goldman Sachs, Dropbox and Deutsche Bank) that specializes in communication and leadership skills for executives; I’m certified in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Steps I and II (I’m an ENFP by the way).
In 2015 I gave a talk at TEDx Broadway and currently serve on the TEDx Leadership Board. I hold a BFA in acting from UNCSA where I was the inaugural Kenan Arts Research Fellow. I’ve been profiled in Forbes, the New York Times, Modern Farmer and The Wall Street Journal. In 2017, I was honored with the Lucille Lortel Visionary Award by the League of Professional Theatre Women.
I reside in North Salem, New York, with my husband Michael, our new baby June and our rescue mutt, Murray.
I'm taking on new partners and would love to hear what you’re up to.
